DepEd reading literacy push makes gains in Zambo pilot

The Department of Education on Friday lauded the outcomes of the “Bawat Bata Makababasa Program” (BBMP) which ran its pilot tests in Zamboanga last year.

A survey by think tank group Youth Impact revealed that gains were made among students in Filipino, English, and Mother Tongue.

An increase of 24 percent was tallied among Grade 2 learners in Filipino, while general proficiency levels rose to 2.40 points from 1.28.

Beyond the numbers, the agency noted that students who once struggled to read are showing confidence during class performance.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara, in a press statement, affirmed the survey results in hopes of translating its success to the agency’s other intervention programs.

The BBMP program, launched in May of last year, aims to address literacy concerns among young learners through conducting short, daily reading sessions.

Prior to this, an Educational Commission (EDCOM II) study earlier showed that 18 million Filipinos who graduated from High School pose difficulty to show comprehension.
