Marcos: AI will ‘touch everything,’ urges policy preparedness

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. warned that artificial intelligence (AI) poses both opportunities and risks for the Philippines, saying the technology is rapidly expanding across sectors and must be addressed through policy, regulation, and education.

In the latest BBM Podcast, the chief executive noted concerns that AI could displace jobs and shift learning environments.

The President agreed that AI presents significant disruption but emphasized that the country must learn to adapt and maximize its benefits.

Mr. Marcos said he had drafted a wide range of topics on AI for discussion at the upcoming ASEAN Summit.

“AI in education, AI in infrastructure, AI in renewables, it does not end,” he said.

“The more time you spend on it, the longer that list will become because it’s going to touch everything,” the president added.

Mr. Marcos also pointed out that lawmakers must gain a deeper understanding of new technological innovations to craft responsive policy.

“Legislation is always years behind technology,” the President said.

“Generally, legislators do not immediately understand technology. So what will you legislate? What’s the best way for the Philippines to take full advantage of AI?” he added.

The President noted that while AI could boost development and efficiency nationwide, it also amplifies risks, including misinformation, disinformation, and the spread of fabricated content.

He said balancing innovation with safeguards must form part of the country’s long-term AI strategy.
