Embassies warn Filipinos as Thailand-Cambodia clash escalates

The Philippine Embassies in Thailand and Cambodia have warned Filipinos near the borders to remain vigilant, ensure safety, and report whereabouts amid reports of ongoing armed clashes.

In an advisory released on Monday, December 8, the Philippine Embassy in Thailand encouraged the Filipino community to actively monitor official communication channels for the latest security updates.

“The Philippine Embassy in Thailand urgently advises members of the Filipino community in the border provinces of Ubon Ratchatani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Sa Kaeo, Buri Ram, Chantaburi, and Trat to earnestly follow the advice, including any evacuation orders, from local public safety and community officials, their employers, and other pertinent authorities in the affected areas,” the statement read.

The embassy also discouraged travel to these provinces given the current situation.

Similarly, the Philippine Embassy in Cambodia has advised Filipinos near the border provinces of Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, and Preah Vihear to avoid areas where military operations are reported, as well as military bases, facilities, and personnel.

“Follow Advisories, pay close attention to official advisories from national and local agencies and strictly follow safety instructions from authorities. Avoid Conflict Areas, stay away from areas where military operations are reported and avoid military camps, facilities, and forces,” it said.

Both embassies committed to closely monitoring the border situation and affirmed their readiness to assist any Filipinos in need.

On Monday, December 8, reports indicated renewed fighting between the two countries over a disputed border, resulting in the displacement of thousands of people.

To recall, in October, Thailand and Cambodia signed an expanded ceasefire declaration in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed by former U.S. President Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
