Anti-corruption group cites differences in Luneta, EDSA protests

An anti-corruption group on Tuesday raised differences between the November 30 protests held in Luneta Park and in the EDSA People Power Monument, respectively.

Professor David San Juan, convener of TAMA NA and co-initiator of Kilusang Bayan Kontra Kurakot (KBKK), shared that rallies have significant differences in an interview with Manila Standard.

“To reiterate, on November 30, on EDSA, no one called for ‘Marcos-Duterte resign’ or ‘Marcos-Duterte be held accountable.’ It is also noteworthy that the placards with ‘Marcos’ on EDSA are very few, and there are almost no banners with ‘Marcos’ on EDSA either,” San Juan said in Filipino.

In contrast, he stressed that there were speakers in the Manila-based rally calling for the accountability of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte.

He noted, however, that there were fewer differences during the September 21 rally since there were no Marcos-Duterte resignation calls from any group yet.

Further, while the masses who mainly see that Marcos should be held accountable are more prevalent in Luneta, David said that many in EDSA are still appealing to the President to take action against corruption.

Despite this, he believes that Filipinos still have a united stand against corruption and end political dynasties, even if the level of analysis “differs on who is corrupt and who is not.”

In their online petition with 875 verified signatures, the group enumerated the seven demands that they seek from the government.

It also issued a statement regarding reportedly false information circulated by Cardinal Pablo Virgilio “Ambo” David regarding the “Baha sa Luneta” rally.

Manila Standard sought the comment of the former Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) head, but he has yet to respond as of publication.
