The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported early Wednesday that a brief minor phreatomagmatic eruption occurred over Taal Volcano in Batangas, but this is not connected to the powerful magnitude-6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City in Cebu late Tuesday.
The volcanic activity was observed at 2:02 a.m. on October 01 as steam was seen rising from Taal’s main crater, based on the 16-second footage captured by the thermal and IP cameras of Phivolcs’ observation stations on the island.
“The event produced a 2500-meter-high eruption plume that drifted northwest. Alert Level 1 prevails over Taal Volcano,” according to Phivolcs.
State seismologists explained that this particular volcanic eruption is not geologically connected to the strong earthquake that affected many parts of Cebu and nearby provinces because they occurred in different locations.
