Palace asks for patience amid ongoing repairs at San Juanico Bridge

Amid mounting concerns from residents and business owners in the Visayas, Malacañang on Monday assured the public that the government is taking swift action to address disruptions caused by the ongoing rehabilitation of the San Juanico Bridge — a key infrastructure link between Samar and Leyte.

Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is aware of the situation and has directed government agencies to take proactive steps to mitigate the impact of the repairs on local residents and businesses.

“This is rehabilitation… it is really more preferable to avoid whatever accidents might cause if they are not fixed promptly,” Castro said.

Castro explained that concerned agencies have been placed under blue alert, signifying heightened readiness to respond to the needs of affected communities. A multi-agency task force has been activated, and public assistance desks will be set up on both ends of the bridge.

“A blue alert has been raised… there is also a 24-hour patrol unit for safety monitoring,” she added, noting that a vehicle weighing station will also be installed to regulate traffic flow and ensure the bridge’s structural integrity.

Due to safety concerns, only light vehicles are currently allowed to pass. To accommodate affected commuters, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has committed to deploying 13 shuttle buses operating 24/7.

Coordination is also underway with local government units and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to ferry passengers if needed.

“The DPWH is coordinating with LGUs and PPA on how to ferry the buses of passengers who may be affected,” Castro said.

The Palace called for public patience and understanding, assuring that the rehabilitation is being carried out with public safety and long-term benefits in mind.
