Speaker Martin Romualdez on Thursday joined the Marcos administration and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in mourning the death of two pilots whose plane crashed in Bukidnon province.
“I join in the grief of our Armed Forces and the families of the two Philippine Air Force (PAF) pilots who sacrificed their lives for the people,” Romualdez said in a mix of English and Filipino.
The leader of the 306-strong House of Representatives said the pilots’ sacrifice reminds the nation of the need for unity.
“This sacrifice is a reminder to all of us of how important it is that we continue to be united as a nation. This is not only against our soldiers; this is a fight of every Filipino against fear, violence, and abuse,” Romualdez said.
“They are not just soldiers; they are sons, brothers, and fathers who left their loved ones to fulfill a great mission. In their last flight, they carried the dream of every Filipino for a safe, peaceful, and prosperous country,” he added.
The House leader then vowed they would continue to help strengthen the AFP: “We assure in Congress that their blood and sweat will not be wasted. We will continue to strengthen our Armed Forces, ensure adequate support for our soldiers, and fight for a country where peace will prevail.”
He also called the pilots heroes and assured their families that the President and his government are ready to help them.
“To the family of our hero pilots: you are not alone. The whole nation shares in your grief. Our President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. and his government are here to make sure that your loved ones are recognized not only as soldiers, but as heroes of our people,” Romualdez said.
“To all Filipino soldiers — in the air, on the ground, at sea — we salute you. Your courage and dedication are the reason why we continue to live freely. Thank you very much for your service and caring,” he added.
