Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla on Monday said the Department of Justice (DOJ) is reviewing the country’s existing laws to strengthen the campaign against fake news.
He made this remark after President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. cautioned the public of the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation as the campaign period began.
“Fake news is something that should not be tolerated because it is actually a great disservice to the country, and making people believe things that are false. I think that is a sin against our country,” Remulla told reporters.
As such, he shared they are already looking at cyberlibel and other cyber laws to find out if there is a need to amend existing laws.
The DOJ has yet to set a target date in reviewing the laws and in filing possible charges against anyone, according to Remulla.
Earlier, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Jay Ruiz raised the need for a regulatory body to combat fake news in social media.
