Bishop Broderick Pabillo encouraged Filipinos on Tuesday evening to become agents of positive change and keep the spirit of the 1986 EDSA People Power revolution alive beyond politics.

The Vicar Apostolic of Taytay celebrated the final mass at the EDSA Shrine in Quezon City, where he reflected on the sacrifices made by patriotic citizens 39 years ago guided by the grace of God.

“EDSA happened not because of us. It was because of grace. It happened because of God,” he told parishioners.

Pabillo said he was in Rome when the events of the 1986 uprising unfolded and he was amazed by it.

He acknowledged that preserving the legacy and memories of EDSA People Power I take serious work, but one must not give up in sharing the truth behind this significant chapter in our nation’s history.

“Let us make the effort to remind the people not to forget EDSA. Let its light remain uncovered. Its work remains unfinished,” Pabillo said.

In an interview later with Manila Standard, Pabillo also advised Filipinos to look beyond politics in commemorating the People Power anniversary.

“We should not politicize the EDSA revolution. It is for all Filipinos,” he said, noting that every Filipino is welcome to support the anniversary rites but their words should be backed by actions.

“They have to change. Support must be expressed not just in words, not just in presence, but their ability to change (for the better),” Pabillo added.

Shrine rector Fr. Jerome Secillano, in his speech, said that the church will continue to serve its purpose in proclaiming its mission. He also encouraged everyone not to lose hope.
