Marbil exacts accountability vs. erring Taguig City cops

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil ordered a thorough and impartial investigation into the recent incident in Taguig City, emphasizing that any police personnel found guilty of misconduct will be held fully accountable.

“The PNP is committed to upholding the highest standards of discipline and professionalism. Any actions that violate police operational procedures and the rights of our citizens will not be tolerated, and appropriate sanctions will be imposed,” Marbil stated.

The case involved at least 10 Taguig City-based police officers, who allegedly broke in and entered a residential unit without a search warrant on February 9. The incident went viral on social media, prompting immediate response from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO).

NCRPO Director Brigadier General Anthony Aberin relieved the accused policemen, including their immediate supervisor, to ensure an objective inquiry. He said multiple criminal complaints have been filed before the Taguig City Prosecutor’s Office against the erring cops.

The charges include robbery, grave coercion, physical injury, obstruction of justice, and malicious mischief as well as violation of Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Law.

Aberin said the charges filed against each respondent are based on illegal actions they allegedly committed and degree of participation in the illegitimate operation. The Department of Justice (DOJ) will evaluate the complaints.

The NCRPO chief also said the accused cops will face a separate administrative investigation. He assured that due process will be observed.

“If substantial evidence is found that transgressions against PNP rules were committed, concerned police officers will be dismissed, demoted or suspended, depending on the degree of their participation in the illegal act,” Aberin said.

“As law enforcers, we are duty-bound to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of every individual. This investigation is not just about accountability but also about reinforcing public trust in the PNP,” Marbil added.

In light of this development, the PNP chief directed all police units nationwide to strengthen adherence to operational procedures and ethical standards to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He reaffirmed the PNP’s commitment to transparency and professionalism, ensuring that every action taken serves the best interests of the public.

“The PNP remains steadfast in its mission to serve and protect with integrity. We will continue to uphold the principles of justice and fairness in all our operations,” Marbil said.
