UP Law launches primer on impeachment proceedings

The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law has launched a primer on the impeachment process to provide the media, the public, and officials with basic information on impeachment proceedings.

The institution launched the document following the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte by the House of Representatives last week to further UP’s public service orientation.

In an exclusive interview with Manila Standard on Sunday, assistant professor Paolo Tamase said he is hopeful that it will provide critical information for the ongoing impeachment discussions that is based on correct information.

“We live in a world where disinformation even on the most basic things is rampant and taken advantage of. Regardless of where people stand, the current impeachment saga raises fair questions about corruption, abuse of power, and what it means to be a democracy with accountability,” he said.

Impeachment has the potential to draw the public into many discussions and queries, he noted.

Tamase, who also teaches a course in Rights-Based Constitutional Review, revealed they are already working on a simplified Filipino version to further improve access to ordinary citizens.

Opinions on novel issues are the personal academic views of the authors and do not reflect those of the UP College of Law.
