Several thousand protesters assembled at the EDSA People Power Monument on Friday to urge the House of Representatives to proceed with the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Led by the Akbayan Party-list Group, the protesters called out lawmakers for their apparent inaction on the three impeachment complaints against Duterte.

Akbayan Rep. Perci Cendaña appealed to the House leadership to immediately act on the complaints, all of which were lodged in December 2024.

Cendaña, the endorser of the first complaint, warned that every day of inaction emboldens the Vice President to cling to impunity and evade accountability.

“The time has come to take decisive action and finally impeach the Vice President. While she remains in public office, we are allowing plunder to continue in our government,” he said in a mixture of Filipino and English.

The Akbayan lawmaker urged House members to prioritize the nation’s interests over political calculations.

“We must uphold our constitutional mandate to revoke the powers of abusive government officials,” Cendaña said.

He commended protesters who have stood their ground on Duterte’s impeachment even as some have been swayed by political pressure and become cool with her ouster.

The party-list lawmaker also warned against attempts by the Duterte camp to hijack public discourse and divert attention from the impeachment complaints.

“We congratulate all Filipinos who mobilized today to call for Sara Duterte’s removal and to stand against corruption. But let us not be complacent. Let us remain vigilant against the Dutertes’ attempts to twist the narrative and undermine the call for justice and accountability,” Cendaña said.

Duterte faces three impeachment complaints over alleged misconduct and misuse of millions of dollars in government funds, but legislators have yet to tackle them just days before Congress adjourns next week ahead of the May midterm elections.

The 46-year-old vice president, who is estranged from President Marcos but remains his constitutional successor in case he is unable to perform his duties, has denied the allegations.

Mr. Marcos himself has urged Congress not to pursue Duterte’s impeachment, calling it a “storm in a teacup” that would distract the legislature from its primary responsibilities. With AFP
