CEBU CITY—A public school building with 12 levels will soon be constructed at the grounds of Don Vicente Rama Memorial National High School (DVRMNHS) in Barangay Basak, San Nicolas, Cebu City.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan, Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara, and Cebu City first district Rep. Edu Rama led the groundbreaking ceremony for this new educational facility on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

The medium-rise school building has a construction budget of P700-million. It will have 42 classrooms and nine workshop rooms dedicated to junior and senior high school students of Cebu City south district. It will also have an elevator and restroom facilities on every floor.

Rama thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the national government for approving this project. It is expected to “address classroom shortages and enhance the learning opportunities” for the benefit of Cebuano students.

The lawmaker said he started legislative work for the project sometime in 2022 as member of the House committee on basic education. After several inspections by the DPWH and the Department of Education (DepEd), DVRMNHS was selected to host the new educational facility.

“The criteria for choosing the site was based on population data and the presence of many alumni in the area and the neighboring mountain barangays… We are [ready] to begin the construction in March this year once the budget is available,” Rama said.

According to DepEd, Central Visayas is among the top regions in the country with the highest classroom shortages. The groundbreaking ceremony included the signing of a memorandum of agreement between various national and local government officials.
