BARMM students gain access to CHED-certified graduate programs in Basilan, Sulu

Students in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) can now pursue quality post-graduate education closer to home in the state colleges of Basilan and Sulu, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced.

CHED granted Certificates of Program Compliance (COPC) to the graduate programs offered by Basilan State College (BasSC) and Sulu State College (SSC) in a ceremony held on Monday (January 20) at the agency’s central office in Quezon City.

“Students in BARMM can now access not only free tertiary education but also quality postgraduate education. They no longer need to travel to other regions or to Metro Manila to earn professional degrees and advance their careers,” CHED Secretary Prospero De Vera III said.

He officially handed over the COPCs to BasSC President Haipa Salain and SSC President Charisma Ututalum. “Sulu State College and Basilan State College now offer high-standard graduate programs right in their own communities,” De Vera said.

The COPC certifies that specific degree programs offered by State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) comply with CHED’s policies, standards, and guidelines. It is also a requirement for students to qualify for professional licensure exams.

BasSC received COPCs for the Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Management, Doctor of Education major in Educational Administration, and Master of Arts in Education major in Educational Administration.

Meanwhile, SSC obtained COPCs for its Master in Public Administration and Doctor of Public Administration programs.

Under the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act (Republic Act No. 10931), COPC serves as a quality benchmark for SUC and LUC budgets, ensuring adherence to educational excellence across the country.
