AFP boosts intel ops, cyber defense in the wake of espionage threats

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Monday the activation of its Intelligence Command and the reorganization of its Cyber Command to boost its capabilities in addressing evolving security threats.

AFP Public Affairs Office Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad said these measures are part of the military’s commitment to strengthening Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Operations.

The announcement comes in the wake of the arrest of a Chinese national and two Filipino cohorts for alleged espionage involving military bases and other critical areas.

Trinidad emphasized that these steps aim to prepare the military for modern security challenges effectively.

He acknowledged the importance of the recent arrests in demonstrating the AFP’s dedication to safeguarding national security.

“This operation, conducted with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), highlights our proactive stance in addressing threats to the country’s safety and sovereignty,” he added.

To further enhance its defense strategy, the AFP is employing advanced technologies such as drones and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) systems.

Trinidad also pointed out that the military is strengthening security protocols in camps and vital installations, in line with the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA).

“We call on all Filipinos to remain vigilant and actively participate in ensuring our nation’s security,” Trinidad said.

“The AFP remains steadfast in its mission to adapt to the demands of the times, defend the country against modern threats, and secure the sovereignty and stability of the Philippines,” he added.
