The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is set to deploy the BRP Gabriela Silang to replace BRP Teresa Magbanua, which returned to Bataan port for repairs after experiencing engine overheating early Monday near Bajo de Masinloc or Panatag Shoal in Zambales.
Magbanua, previously instrumental in fending off China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 5901 near the disputed waters in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), underwent “derangement” and had to be repaired immediately, PCG spokesperson for WPS Commodore Jay Tarriela reported.
“This early morning (Monday) BRP Teresa Magbanua experienced overheating of auxiliary engines, that’s why it returned to Port of Bataan. That is the reason why China Coast Guard was again able to come near at a distance of 67 nautical miles,” Tarriela said.
The PCG sent its Islander aircraft to issue radio challenges against CCG 5901, also known as the ‘monster’ ship because of its size, which has been making intrusive patrols in the area declared under the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The BRP Gabriela Silang will take over patrol duties soon as part of the PCG’s commitment “to protect our maritime jurisdiction,” Tarriela said. He noted they are continuously monitoring China’s activities to prevent any untoward maritime incidents.
