DPWH eyes infra overhaul, to launch major EDSA rehabilitation in 2025

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced major infrastructure projects, including the long-awaited rehabilitation of the country’s busiest thoroughfare EDSA, will be prioritized this year under President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive.

During a Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon briefing on Wednesday, Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan confirmed that improving EDSA’s riding quality is among the administration’s top priorities.

“The President wants us to improve the riding quality of EDSA. We will rehabilitate the entire EDSA starting 2025,” Bonoan said.

Currently plagued by traffic congestion and uneven road conditions, EDSA’s overhaul aims to address persistent issues and enhance the commuting experience for millions of Filipinos.

“Right now, driving on EDSA can be uncomfortable—your vehicle shakes so much it’s hard to even send a text. It’s time to rehabilitate EDSA once and for all,” Bonoan said.

The DPWH chief expressed optimism that the project would be completed within the year, alongside other infrastructure initiatives.

In addition to EDSA, Bonoan highlighted other transformative projects, including a Zamboanga Sibugay bridge connecting the Zamboanga Peninsula to Olutanga Island. This initiative is expected to boost regional economic activity and accessibility.

Two additional bridges are also under construction in Sulu, furthering efforts to improve connectivity in Mindanao.

Bonoan likewise noted that the Central Luzon Expressway (CLLEX), connecting Tarlac to Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, is on track to be finished this year. Spanning approximately 30 to 40 kilometers, the expressway will provide a direct route between the provinces, significantly reducing travel time.

“The completion of these projects will benefit Filipinos nationwide, fostering economic activity and making daily commutes more bearable,” Bonoan said.
