Senator Francis Tolentino expressed his support towards the arrival of 300 Afghan nationals in the Philippines, who are seeking resettlement in the United States.
“I commend our government in its decision to strengthen its commitment to international treaties, emphasizing that adherence not only reflects the country’s values, but also enhances its global standing,” Tolentino said.
These individuals, many of whom have children, previously assisted US forces in Afghanistan and are now processing their Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) after being left behind following the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021.
The agreement facilitating their temporary stay was signed between the Philippines and the US in July 2024 and ratified by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in September 2024.
Under this arrangement, the Afghan nationals will reside in a secure facility for up to 59 days while their visa applications are processed, with all associated costs covered by the US government.
“I cannot stress enough the importance of demonstrating shared humanity by aiding those fleeing violence and persecution. Accepting displaced refugees is the highest standard when it comes to adherence to international human rights commitment,” Tolentino said.
Each applicant underwent thorough security vetting and medical screening prior to their arrival, ensuring that they pose no security threat to the Philippines.
The US State Department has assured that normal embassy operations will continue unaffected during this process, emphasizing the humanitarian nature of this initiative.
“Human rights are universal, and we must ensure our legal frameworks align with international standards. That said, let us ensure that our 300 Afghan brothers and sisters are treated with dignity and respect.”
