34 areas declare “state of calamity” due to Kanlaon eruption

A total of 34 areas in the country have been declared in “State of Calamity” due to the effects of the Kanlaon eruption, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday.

In its latest report, the disaster agency noted that 32 areas in Region 6 and 2 areas in Region 7 have declared this state.

The assistance provided by the government and its local counterparts to families affected by the ongoing unrest in Kanlaon has now reached PHP 150 million.

According to the report, 9,761 families have benefited from this assistance—7,309 families in Western Visayas and 2,452 families in Central Visayas.

This assistance includes family food packs, hygiene and sleeping kits, as well as financial help.

The NDRRMC stated that almost 12,000 families, equivalent to 46,259 individuals, are now affected by the Kanlaon eruption.
