Ignorance of traffic signs tops MMDA list of most common violations

Disregarding traffic signs emerged as the most common violation among motorists on the road, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

Based on the latest data from the MMDA Single Ticketing System (STS), a total of 65,933 drivers committed this traffic violation. This was followed by unattended illegal parking with 43,535 violators, and 38,143 motorcycle riders who violated the dress code.

Additionally, 32,741 drivers were caught violating the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP), also known as the number coding scheme, based on the data recorded from January to December.

Other common violations included riding without a helmet, failing to use seat belts, over speeding, and loading or unloading in prohibited zones.

The MMDA and local government units (LGUs) are implementing the STS designed to standardize the processes of apprehending violators, paying fines, and redeeming vehicle plates and driver’s licenses.

The initiative aims to establish effective transport and traffic management in Metro Manila and to help cut red tape, limit opportunities for corruption, and eradicate forms of negotiations between the motorist and the apprehending officer.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes recently met with representatives from the Land Transportation Office, Cosmic Technologies Inc., RBS Software Solutions, and LGUs to discuss the status of the STS.

According to the STS Go-Live Dates report, the centralized digital enforcement system provides clear visibility of the STS database, which includes real-time record-keeping of issued tickets, efficient online payment for drivers, and real-time connectivity for Land Transportation Office verification.

The discussion also addressed issues related to SIM cards and the use of digital handheld devices by various LGUs.

Artes emphasized that the purpose of the meeting is to ensure the implementation of the STS across Metro Manila is orderly and effective.

The policy enforces special laws such as the Seat Belts Use Act of 1999, the Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act, the Mandatory Use of Motorcycle Helmet Act, the Children’s Safety on Motorcycles Act, the Anti-Distracted Driving Act, and the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act.
