State weather bureau PAGASA said on Sunday a tropical depression monitored outside of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) could intensify, which was already named ‘Romina’ after triggering a tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 over the Kalayaan Islands.
In an 11:00 a.m. weather advisory, PAGASA said a heavy rainfall outlook is forecast over the Kalayaan Islands, the rest of Palawan, and several provinces across the Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol and Western Visayas from Sunday until Christmas Day, December 25.
PAGASA attributed the rains due to the trough of TD ‘Romina’ and the shear line that currently affect weather outlook in the said areas, including Quezon province, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo and Northern Samar.
‘Romina’ transformed from a low pressure area into a tropical depression at around 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. It is responsible for the bad weather currently experienced by residents in the Kalayaan Islands and Palawan, according to weather forecasters.
It was last monitored at 365 kilometers south of Pag-asa Island, Kalayaan, Palawan packing winds of up to 55 km per hour near the center and 70 km/h gustiness. It was moving north northeastward at 30 km/h.
