The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Monday that government assistance to families impacted by the recent eruption of Mount Kanlaon exceeded P29-million.
According to its latest update, Central Visayas received P11,999,208.53 in aid, while Western Visayas was provided P17,013,481. This assistance included family food packs, hygiene and sleeping kits, and modular tents. Additionally, Western Visayas received P364,000 worth of face masks.
The assistance benefited a total of 9,696 families in both regions. The NDRRMC noted, however, that this number may change as validation efforts continue.
As of December 16, the volcanic eruption affected 10,784 families or approximately 43,970 individuals, across 26 barangays in the two regions.
Of this, 4,278 families (13,748 people) are staying in 27 activated evacuation centers, while 694 families (2,366 individuals) are being assisted outside the centers.
Mount Kanlaon, an active volcano, erupted on December 9, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from nearby villages on Negros Island. The volcano’s alert level has been raised to 3, signaling the potential for further hazardous eruptions.
