‘Fake news will kill,’ Marcos warns amid misinformation over Kanlaon eruption

President Ferdinand Marcos warned the public on Friday about the dangers of misinformation in light of the recent Mount Kanlaon eruption, emphasizing that “truth will save lives, fake news will kill.”

Speaking in a video address, President Marcos highlighted the critical role of accurate communication during disasters, warning that the spread of false information could lead to confusion and endanger lives.

“Effective disaster response is anchored on reliable information,” he said, urging citizens to rely on updates from official agencies like the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

President Marcos assured that Phivolcs will continue to issue around-the-clock advisories in simple, clear language to guide the public.

The president called for vigilance against the spread of fake news, particularly on social media, which he said could undermine evacuation efforts and safety protocols.

“I urge everyone, especially those refusing to evacuate, to heed the warnings of our authorities,” Mr. Marcos said.

The President also pledged to continue comprehensive government assistance and emphasized public safety in response to Mount Kanlaon’s eruption.

He reported that more than 45,000 residents have already been evacuated from a six-kilometer danger zone surrounding the volcano, and 84,000 people are planned to be relocated.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has deployed relief supplies to evacuation centers, including food packs, clean water, hygiene kits, and sleeping materials.

“Our government is ready to help,” he said. “As fierce as this volcano may be, so is our determination to extend care and assistance.”

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and Task Force Kanlaon are leading coordinated response efforts. The Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, and Bureau of Fire Protection remain on high alert across Negros Island.

The chief executive emphasized the importance of community cooperation, noting that timely and accurate information is essential for effective disaster management.

“We will step up. We will level up. Any escalation in damages and destruction will be met with a stronger government response,” the President assured.
