Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said he is 98 percent sure to throw his hat into the 2025 Caloocan City mayoralty race.

In a television interview, the retired Philippine naval officer said he is inclined to run for mayor, but is not ruling out anything. He plans to make an official announcement soon.

Trillanes was born and raised in Caloocan City, but has paternal roots in Albay. He is the founder and incumbent president of the Magdalo Party, which has forged alliances with major political parties.

Although he was encouraged to consider a Senate re-election bid, Trillanes said he wanted to take a break from national politics after struggling with ‘burnout’ in the wake of the 2022 elections.

“I want to step back from the national noise. I’m doing this for national consciousness,” he said.

Trillanes said he prefers to help uplift the lives of the urban poor in Caloocan City this time around.

Senator Nancy Binay also expressed her intention to move to local politics. She plans to replace her sister Mayor Abigail Binay-Campos in leading Makati City.

Binay has been in the Senate for two consecutive terms since 2013. She is expected to challenge her brother-in-law, Rep. Luis Campos, Jr., in the  mayoralty race.

The senator has been at odds with her younger sister who will end her term as mayor in June 2025.
