Eighty-two candidates who ran in the recent Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) were disqualified for various reasons, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Friday.
Citing data from the Office of the Clerk of the Commission, Comelec said 48 candidates were disqualified for premature campaigning, the highest among the grounds for disqualification.
Twenty candidates were found guilty in disqualification cases, while five had their certificates of candidacy denied due course or canceled. Another five were disqualified for being deemed nuisance candidates.
Vote buying led to the disqualification of three candidates, while a candidate was disqualified for both premature campaigning and vote buying.
Disqualified candidates were from Agusan del Norte, Bulacan, Tarlac, Iloilo, Laguna, Rizal, Pampanga, Oriental Mindoro and Metro Manila.
The country held the BSKE elections on Oct. 30, 2023 in more than 40,000 barangays or villages across the country.
