LTO suspends license of Ilocos crash driver

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Thursday issued a 90-day suspension on the driver’s license of a motorist whose vehicle collided with two motorcycle riders in San Esteban, Ilocos Sur in February.

Renan Melitante, Intelligence and Investigation Division officer in charge, said the vehicle involved in the incident was already placed under alarm.

The investigation is in connection to the viral video showing the collision of the motorist’s vehicle and two motorcycles participating in the BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge, which severely injured the riders.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident yesterday failed to appear in the hearing set by the IID.

He is given a chance to attend the next hearing so he can explain why he should not be charged with reckless driving in violation of Republic Act 4136.

He was also asked by the LTO why his license should not be revoked due to the incident.

The IID is giving the BMW Owners Society of Saferiders (BOSS), the organizer of the BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge, five days to submit a position paper to explain why it should not face administrative charges in violation of the Road Safety Rules and Standards under RA 4136.

“We have repeatedly been saying that all road users must discipline themselves and be careful enough to comply with the traffic regulations for their safety,” LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Jose Arturo Tugade said.
