Senators commended the historic win of 17-year-old tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex” Eala in the 2022 girls’ junior grand slam singles crown of the US Open Tennis Tournament in New York City, USA.

In sponsoring Senate Resolution No. 199 during the plenary session Monday, September 12, 2022, Senate Majority Floor Leader Joel Villanueva reminded everyone to support every Filipino athlete, whose main goal was to showcase the skills and talents of Filipinos.

Given the necessary support and assistance, he said Alex’s young age speaks volumes of the power of young Filipino athletes.

“Mr. President, esteemed colleagues, yesterday another legend was born. It is indeed my great honor and privilege to sponsor this resolution congratulating Alexandra “Alex” Maniego Eala for winning the 2022 Girls’ Junior Grand Slam Singles Crown of the US Open Tennis Tournament,” he said.

Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go, the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, lauded Eala for making history when she became the first Filipino to win a tennis Grand Slam singles title.

“As Chairman of this Committee and an avid sports enthusiast, let me reiterate my unwavering commitment to the advancement and promotion of a national sports development program in the country through formulating relevant policies and extending assistance to our athletes,” he said.

“As I have said many times before, investing in sports will not only enable us to develop world-class athletes, but it will also help us in keeping our youth away from illegal drugs and other harmful vices,” he stated.
