The Bureau of Customs (BOC) at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has tightened its watch on balikbayan boxes as unscrupulous individuals use this form of shipment as a conduit for smuggling.

This came as the Port of NAIA stepped up its border security efforts as the holiday season approaches.

As the influx of balikbayan boxes and gifts from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) is expected to increase, the authorities assured to provide 24/7 non-intrusive examinations while expediting releases to avoid delays and backlogs.

In addition, the port deployed the Trace Detection System (TDS) to reinforce non-intrusive scanning capabilities and combat agricultural smuggling in the country.

The TDS is a significant addition to the non-intrusive inspection capability of the bureau as it is designed to detect explosives, narcotics, and drugs substances of small magnitude.

The detection is accomplished by sampling non-visible trace amounts of particulates from shipments. The newly-acquired system boasts a throughput of three times more than the traditional systems.

The port is also in close coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) to enhance K-9 screening and guard against contraband.

Meanwhile, the bureau reminded the public to be cautious in sending their packages and parcels.

Overseas Filipino workers and claimants are advised to support legitimate and accredited forwarders to avoid the possibility of being scammed by fly-by-night operators.
