On his first day at the Department of Justice (DOJ), Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” C. Remulla revealed that three attached agencies of the DOJ are considered “problematic” and need cleansing to weed out syndicates, corruption, and irregularities.

During the flag-raising ceremony at DOJ, Remulla identified the three agencies as the Land Registration Authority, the Bureau of Immigration (BI), and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).

Remulla assured the DOJ officials and employees that he is committed to fulfill the mandate of the department.

“You can expect me to be totally committed to our case, totally committed to what the Department of Justice stands for and what we should stand for,” he said.

According to him, he has been informed that there is a syndicate operating at the LRA. “I am not making generalizations. I believe that 95 or maybe 99 percent of those at the LRA are clean. But the one percent who are corrupt stains everyone. It is a heavy task,” he admitted.

At the BI, he said that there are a number of syndicates operating, including those engaged in extortion, protection, and human trafficking.

At the BuCor, Remulla lamented that illegal activities continue to taking place inside the country’s prisons.

He said that since he was named by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. to head the DOJ, he has been studying the work that needs to be done at the department and at its 10 attached agencies.

The DOJ on Monday designated Rogelio D. Gevero, Jr. as officer-in-charge (OIC) of the Bureau of Immigration, in place of BI Commissioner Jaime Morente whose term is co-terminus with former President Rodrigo Duterte.

President Ferdinand  R. Marcos Jr. has ordered all coterminous officials from the previous administration to vacate their posts.

The President issued the order by issuing Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 1, through Executive Secretary Victor D. Rodriguez, last Thursday. MC 1 took effect on noontime of June 30, 2022.

Gevero is currently the head of Immigration Regulation Division of the bureau.

In a memorandum order signed by Remulla, Gevero will serve as OIC until a new immigration commissioner is appointed by President Marcos Jr., in order to ensure continuous and effective delivery of public service. With Vito Barcelo
