TABUK CITY, Kalinga—To address a pressing need for proper waste disposal, the city government is operating its own sanitary landfill facility with a P6.5-million state-of-the-art granulator.

The 6.4-hectare waste facility in Barangay Dilag, 10 kilometers from the city proper, is undergoing improvement pending final issuance of Environmental Compliance Certificate by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the city to operate it.

Salud Lammawin, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer, said the facility is equipped with a centralized material recovery area for recyclable wastes.

Lammawin said the facility also has composting equipment for biodegradable materials and Markle machine as digester and granulator of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste products.

Tabuk acquired the granulator machine earlier this year, Lammawin said.

For site improvements, the area has been fenced while paving of access road and installation of the retaining wall are ongoing.

The Solid Waste Act prohibits use of dumps by any person, including LGUs. After the law takes effect, LGUs are mandated to close open dumpsites and find the most environment friendly way of disposing solid waste.
