Duterte ends ceasefire with communist rebels

President Rodrigo Duterte has terminated government’s unilateral ceasefire with the New People’s Army.

In a speech in North Cotabato on Friday afternoon, Duterte said, “kagabi, I called [Armed Forces Chief of Staff] General Eduardo Año and said ni-lift ko yung ceasefire. Wala ng ceasefire (last night, I called General Año and said I had lifted the ceasefire. There is no more ceasefire).”

Duterte explained the spate of killings against government troops in the last two days following the NPAs’ termination of its own unilateral ceasefire prompted him to make the decision.

“I lost so many soldiers in just 48 hours. I think to continue with the ceasefire does not and will not produce anything,” he said.

Duterte added, “I would like to express my sadness. We cannot have peace with the communist rebels in our generation. But let it not be said that I did not try.”
