Malacañang: No nationwide firecracker ban this year

Malacañang is putting on hold the issuance of an executive order to enforce a nationwide ban on firecrackers on New Year’s eve.

In a press briefing at the Palace on Tuesday morning, Health Undersecretary Gerardo Baguyo explained, they still need to consider many factors before imposing this policy.

The effects on the livelihood of pyrotechnic manufacturers are among those that are being looked into.

Bayugo said, the nationwide ban on firecrackers may be implemented next year.

Nevertheless, he asked local leaders to hold community fireworks display to discourage residents from setting off pyrotechnics to welcome the new year.

As of Tuesday, or four days before 2017, the DOH has recorded about 70 firecracker-related injuries.
