Senate & Congress set to ratify P 3.35T national budget for 2017

The Bicameral Conference Committee of Congress has approved the proposed P 3.35 trillion proposed national budget for next year.

This was in a hearing on Tuesday morning.

Members of the House of Representatives in the bicam have decided to adopt the Senate version of the bill to prevent an impasse.

House Committee on Appropriations Chairperson Karlo Nograles says, “it’s a bicam so it’s give and take. We have to compromise.”

The measure takes out P 8.3 billion proposed allocation for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) which was intended for projects in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Senator Panfilo Lacson blocked the appropriation, saying that the ARMM already has its own DPWH regional office with budget for such projects.

He also sees the allocation as a violation of the ARMM’s Organic Act.

Both the Senate and House of Representatives are now set to ratify the bicameral conference committee report on the proposed budget in their separate sessions.
