House members to make on-site probe of mining firms

The House Committee on Natural Resources will conduct on-site investigations into mining companies that have alleged questionable environmental records.

House Committee Chairman and Bayan Muna Party-list Representative Carlos Zarate says, these include Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company and OceanaGold Corporation.

The lawmaker explains, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has already issued suspension orders on the activities of these companies as they supposedly intrude on ancestral lands and cause environmental destruction.

Aside from Lepanto and OcenaGold, the committee also eyes the ocular inspections of more than 30 other mining sites across the country.
