Former President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III has died, former Presidential Legal Counsel Adolf Azcuna confirmed on Thursday. He was 61.

A member of the Aquino family, who asked not to be named pending official announcement, also confirmed the death to ABS-CBN News.

Aquino was rushed to Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City on Thursday morning for a still unconfirmed illness. Former Press Undersecretary Abigail Valte was expected to make an announcement later.

The son of democracy icons Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon “Cory” Cojuangco Aquino, “Noynoy” was catapulted to the presidency in 2010, riding the wave of sympathy over his mother’s death barely a year before.

A congressman and senator before he ascended to Malacanang, he succeeded Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and stepped down from office in 2016. Aquino handed over the reins to his successor, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, then kept largely out of the spotlight until his death.

This is a developing story. More details to follow.
