Quezon City on Friday announced that delinquent real-property tax owners are now exempted from paying interests accumulated from unpaid previous taxes, following the passage of a measure granting amnesty.

Mayor Joy Belmonte signed Ordinance No. SP-2979 granting all outstanding real-property tax liabilities and delinquencies on land, building or improvements, and machineries as assessed by the Assessor’s Office, relief from the payment of interests on real-property tax deficiency.

She said taxpayers are given until March 31 to accomplish the amnesty application form and pay the delinquent real-property taxes either in full or by installment basis.

District 1 Councilor Victor Ferrer Jr. authored the ordinance.

Belmonte said the city government recognizes the long-term effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) which may burden citizens financially.

“We will continue to provide compassionate support for all our residents and businesses who are still feeling the effects of COVID-19 on our economy,” she said.

Real-property owners who pay their tax for the year 2021 on or before March 31, 2021 can avail of the 20 percent discount.

The city government has provided other tax schemes for taxpayers, such as extension of business tax payment, including fees and charges from Jan. 20 to April 20 without penalty, surcharges, and interest; condoning the surcharge and interest for the delayed second, third and fourth quarter installments for 2020 business tax until March 31; and suspended imposition of real-property tax on land based on the approved schedule of fair market values until Dec. 22.
