DENR to grant P1m to BPSU for Capunitan project

Balanga City, Bataan—The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bataan will grant P1 million to Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) Office of the Extension Training Services (OETS) for livelihood project of the residents of the seaside Barangay Capunitan in Orion town.

Dr. Hermogenes Paguia, BPSU Vice President for Research, Extension and Training Services, said the scope of the project was finalized in a meeting on Friday between DENR Bataan Division Chief Mila Ramirez and BPSU Office of Extension and Training Services (OETS) Director Dr. Bernadeth Gabor.

Paguia said OETS will consult barangay officials and residents to identify the livelihood activities to be conducted.

It was also agreed OETS will be given leeway in managing the fund, designing livelihood training programs, and establishing support mechanisms for the beneficiaries.

Paguia said Capunitan residents will be organized into an association for project sustainability.

A memorandum of agreement between DENR Bataan and BPSU will be signed. The project is targeted to be implemented in six months. 

BPSU President Dr. Greg Rodis is supporting the project, as he has been pushing for sustainable innovations and researches of the university to reach end users through extension works. Butch Gunio

“The innovations and researches we are doing in BPSU will mean nothing if do not reach end users via extension works”, Rodis said.

 BPSU is known to have dynamic research and extension office. 

Two years ago, a fire gutted the coastal village of Capunitan, rendering about 600 families of mostly fisherfolks homeless.
