“How can you budget P2,000 for a meal good for 10 people?”

This was the challenge celebrity mom Marian Rivera took on recently, showing how to budget, shop, and cook a meal for the family.

During the P2000 Salu-Salo Challenge of WalterMart Supermarket, conducted live on Facebook, Rivera was able to make four of her family’s favorite food: spaghetti, menudo, barbecue, and lumpiang shanghai. She even had a few extra money to buy some snacks through WalterMart’s Grocery Delivery (GD) app Promo Tab.

How did she do it?

Her first advice is to plan the budget well. Rivera identified the budget she would need for meals, drinks, and other things needed for a salu-salo. She then made a list.

“WalterMart helps you budget easily because they have suggested meal recipes that will help you forecast how much you will need for a certain meal,” she said

The GD app has a list of meal suggestions where customers can click the designated recipe and all the ingredients needed will go directly to their cart. It also allows customers to choose the quantity (in kilograms) needed for all the fresh products.

For those shopping at the grocery in person, Rivera recommends going to the establishment early to avoid crowds during rush hours.

She, however, has been using WalterMart’s delivery service. “You order online and the ingredients will be delivered to your doorstep,” she said.

When shopping, Rivera emphasizes sticking to the budget allotted. But should there be need to choose for alternatives—for instance, when the item on the list is sold out—her advice is to “look for alternatives that of the same quality but with better value.”

“You don’t need expensive ingredients just to cook your most well-loved recipes. We can explore other options.”

She also doesn’t believe in choosing quality over quantity. “Why do you have to choose between the two?” she asked. The best is to have “quantity but of course without compromising quality.”

Her final advice when shopping for meals with a limited budget is to look for promos.

In fact, during her live Facebook challenge, she checked WalterMart’s daily promos that allowed her to use the extra money left for snacks and things for her kids.

“Hindi ka lang basta naka-save, masayang masaya ka pa kasi nga, you get more than what you budgeted for,” she enthused. “In the end, happy ang shopping mo!”

Marian Rivera is looking forward to WalterMart’s P99 Anniversaya Deals on October 15-18, during which several bundled packs are priced at P99, P199, and P299.
