The Parañaque City government has banned private and public utility vehicles from using the motorcycle and bicycle lanes along Sucat Road.
Beginning today (Oct. 12), motorists obstructing and traversing along the designated and exclusive lanes for motorcycle and bike riders will be fined P1,000 per offense.
In his directive, Mayor Edwin Olivarez ordered the city traffic and parking management office to effectively implement Ordinance 2020-23, designating the outer lane of Sucat Road (A. Santos Avenue) to Ninoy Aquino Avenue, including the guidelines and penalties of the local law.
Under the ordinance, the inner lane of the 12-kilometer avenue would be allocated to private vehicles; the center lane to delivery trucks, vans and other and long vehicles, and the outer lane would be used by bicycles and motorcycles.
The bike and motorcycle lane has blue road markings and signages in accordance with international standards.
Olivarez said all vehicles caught illegally parked along the bike and motorcycle lane will also be fined of P1,000.
He added that motorcycle riders who will traverse outside the exclusive lane will be penalized of P1,000 while bike riders will charge P500 in every offense.
Violators will be sent notices and tickets through the city’s no contact apprehension policy, which has been implemented since 2018.
Olivarez encouraged the public to report violations on the city’s bike lanes from obstructions. On other hand, he appealed to motor vehicle owners to yield to bikers at all times.
He said bicycle riding not only promotes health and leisure but also provide an alternative solution to mitigate the possible shortage of available mass transportation during this time of COVID-19 pandemic.
