When the nation went on a lockdown, people took the extra effort to stay home as much as possible for everyone’s safety. The same also happened for Unique Salonga, one of the Coke Studio PH artists for this season. Unique saw the lockdown as an opportunity to continue using music to help uplift people’s spirits.
Expressing his sentiment about being involved in this year’s Coke Studio, Unique said, “Excited ako kasi bagong experience ulit, ngayon ko lang siya naranasan. Tsaka matagal-tagal na rin kasi bago ko ulit gawin ‘to, so nakaka-miss din.”
Being used to staying at home, Unique took the time to improve himself as a musician and an artist. “Mas natutunan kong pahalagahan ‘yong oras ko.” In addition to improving his artistry, Unique shared how staying at home made him realize the importance of time and maximizing the time we are given.
As a trailblazer of psychedelic rock in the Filipino music scene, Unique cites Tame Impala, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys as his inspirations. Unique also makes sure that he stays true to himself when creating music. “Wala pa akong masyadong naririnig na ganung tunog dito… tsaka ayun ‘yong pinakapakinggan ko talaga personally,” he added.
Coke Studio is highlighting the importance of making ourselves “peel good,” especially at a time like this. In Unique’s case, it is all about spending time with himself, getting to know himself better, and through writing. “Time sa sarili, ayun ‘yong feel good ko. Importante siya kasi mas nae enjoy ko ‘yong kung anong meron ako at mas nakikilala ko sarili ko,” he shared. Then eventually, when the lockdown is over, Unique is looking forward to watch gigs, hang out with friends, and travel, particularly to Japan.
