After a five-month layoff, Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo earned a share of the bronze medal in the vault exercises to finish 12th overall in the 53rd All-Japan Seniors Gymnastics Championships last Tuesday.

The 20-year-old Yulo tallied a total of 83.398 points after completing six events and shared the third position in vault with 11-time world champion, Kenzo Shirai.

Competitions were finally held after six months of postponement in Takasaki, Japan. Almost all of the country’s top gymnasts joined.

Shirai’s performance was considered subpar after he eventually placed 24th overall. Yulo tried to impress when improved his routine with a double twisting double layout.

It was Yulo’s coach Munehiro Kugimiya who introduced and instructed him to do double twisting, double layout during the meet.

Keisuke Asato, who eventually took 72nd place overall, claimed a share of the gold in the vault with Wataru Kanigawa after both tallied 14.9 points.

Overall, Kazuma Kaya ruled the men’s division after displaying an excellent form and consistency on all six events. He snared the title with an impressive 86.998.

Wataru Tanigawa placed second with 85.965. Kenta Chiba took third with 85.166.

Yulo did not do well in the floor exercises, which earned him a seat in the Tokyo Olympics last year.

He did not impress the judges in the same way that he did when he saw action in the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart where he claimed gold in the floor exercise finals.

It was Takumi Sato who gained the gold in the floors with 15.033 points, with overall fifth placer Kazumi Matsumi in second with 14.733. Naoto Hayasaka snagged the bronze with 14.7 points.

Gymnastics Association of the Philippines chief Cynthia Carrion said Yulo’s showing was good, considering that he placed 12th overall.

“There were 100 competitors. Shirai, the best gold medalist got the same score as Caloy in vault,” said Carrion following his talks with Kugimiya, who is with the national men’s team.

Kugimiya told Carrion that Yulo took 12th place while doing well in apparatus and in the all-around, “but remember his skill is in floor and vault.”

Yulo’s mentor hopes that he will be better the next time he competes.

“He will compete again on Dec. 13 in the all-around, and hopefully have better score,” said Kugimiya.
