A majority of the adult Filipinos surveyed by a polling firm from July 3 to 6 this year believed that their quality of life got worse in the past year.
Social Weather Stations conducted the poll during the lockdown, which is aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019. It conducted the poll through its National Mobile Phone Survey.
SWS found that 79 percent of the adult Filipinos it surveyed said the quality of their life got worse, and it called them “Losers.”
Twelve percent of those polled said the quality of their life was the same (“Unchanged”), and only 8 percent said it got better (“Gainers”) compared to a year ago.
“The 79-percent proportion of Losers in July 2020 is the second highest proportion recorded by SWS. It is next only to the record-high 83 percent in May 2020,” SWS said.
The July survey also showed that the number of “gainers,” or the people who believed that the quality of their life improved this year compared to last year, was eight percent.
SWS said this was “the second lowest proportion recorded” compared to the historic 6-percent low recorded last May.
It also noted that the net gainers’ score in the July survey was “–72 (Gainers minus Losers, correctly rounded), or a slight improvement from the –78 in May 2020.”
SWS said 12 percent of the adult Filipinos in the July survey described their quality of life as unchanged.
The National Mobile Phone Survey conducted in July was a probability-based survey using mobile phone and computer-assisted telephone interviews or CATI.
SWS said 1,555 adult Filipinos aged 18 and above participated in the survey, including 306 in the National Capital Region, 451 in “Balance Luzon” or those outside Metro Manila, 388 in the Visayas and 410 in Mindanao.
The polling firm said there were sampling-error margins of ±2 percent for the national percentages, ±6 percent for Metro Manila, ±5 percent for Balance Luzon, ±5 percent for the Visayas and ±5 percent for Mindanao.
“The area estimates were weighted by the Philippine Statistics Authority’s medium-population projections for 2020 to obtain the national estimates,” SWS said.
