The Valenzuela City government on Tuesday said its senior citizens who are not pensioners under the Social Security System and Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) will be receiving their social pension (SocPen).

A total of 7,582 elderly were SocPen recipients courtesy of the Department of Social Welfare and Development that coordinated with its local counterpart, Office of Senior Citizens Affairs and City Treasurer’s Office to ensure an unhampered distribution to them, Mayor Rex Gatchalian said.

As mandated by Republic Act 9994 or the “Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010” and under the government’s Social Pension for Indigent Senior

Citizens Program, an indigent senior citizen is entitled to a monthly stipend of P500 or a total of P3,000 for the period of six months.

The amount is intended to augment a senior citizen’s budget for daily provisions and medical needs, and that the stipend is given on a semestral basis, either in person, via cash card, or through door-to-door delivery, Gatchalian said.
