A few days before her birthday, Julie Anne San Jose dropped a cover of “Bagsakan,” a rap song performed by late master rapper Francis Magalona, his heir apparent Gloc-9, and Chito Miranda.
Just a few hours after Julie uploaded her cover on YouTube, everyone on social media was talking about how she slayed the rap parts originally performed by three artists. Well, not every singer in town can rap, so to perfectly slay each verse like a pro, it’s not surprising that people laud Julie for her exceptional talent.
Meanwhile, a day before she turned 26 (May 17 is her birthday), the pop sweetheart held a digital mini-concert dubbed Jam with Julie where she performed songs of OPM bands, such as Parokya ni Edgar, Sponge Cola, Eraserheads, Hale, and Rivermaya. Here, she once again stole the hearts of the viewers. And judging by the netizens’ reaction, Julie did a good job. Actually, she did an amazing job.
In a video interview with Manila Standard, Julie admitted that the songs she performed during the mini-concert, streamed live on Facebook, were the songs she grew up with.
“Those were my high school jams. They don’t get old and they bring so many memories whenever I sing them,” she started.
“Whenever I listen to classic songs from those bands, I get to remember my high school days, 'yung nag-aaral ako, and while I was hanging out with my friends. I continued listening to these songs until college, you see, these are classic,” she carried on.
The versatile chanteuse was able to interact with her fans while doing the online show, which she staged at her home with the help of her family.
“It’s fascinating how you get that instant reaction from fans. Well, doing the live shows is different, I mean, the feedback you get from the crowd boosts your confidence while performing, but with the new set up that we have, I get to experience the same interaction with fans, and it’s not that different. The only difference is, they can comment on how you look including your hair and makeup,” she beamed alluding to the kind of interaction she had with her fans during the online mini-concert.
Julie staged the show because, apart from celebrating another year of her life, she wanted to thank her fans for their unparalleled support to her career. She is happy that in her own little way, she was able to update her supporters and entertain them at the same time.
“A lot of things have been happening right now, this has been a rough year for most of us. I wanted to help in my own little way through my music. I wanted to uplift their soul. I wanted to inspire them,” she said.
Last April 24, Julie Anne dropped her latest single titled “Better” which now continues to be at the top of the charts.
The original song, written by Julie Anne herself, debuted at the top of the iTunes Philippines All-Genre Chart upon its release. The song has also been featured on Spotify New Music Friday playlists across Asia, including the Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Malaysia.
