Adiwang uses lockdown to reconnect with family

As the Philippines enters its third month in lockdown, Team Lakay’s Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang is spending his days in quarantine productively.

From creating his own training equipment for his home workouts to helping his fellow Igorots by sharing his blessings, Adiwang is making the most of every moment during the government-imposed lockdown.

Most importantly, “Thunder Kid” appreciates the fact that he can time with his family now – something he missed out on before COVID-19.

"I am just trying to adapt and adjust so we can remain productive. I’m making new tools and refurbishing old stuff like punching bags so I can stay active at home,” Adiwang said.

“The biggest thing for me is how this ECQ gave us more time with our families. Because of this lockdown, we have all the time in the world to spend with each other and develop our relationship.”

Looking at greener pastures, Adiwang worked in Malaysia as a gym instructor back in 2013. It might have helped Adiwang financially, but it came at the expense of his family back in the Philippines—his parents got separated and his siblings were trying their luck overseas.

There might have been a time in the past when they were all scattered, but he believes that family will always be home and is bonded together for life.

“That was one of the hardest situations as a family because we all got separated from each other, but I knew that was just a mere test for us, a test that we had to overcome,” Adiwang said.

“But now, I am able to do things with my siblings that we weren’t able to do before. Now they join me in training and they even hold pads for me. We have more time to talk and exchange ideas on how to make tomorrow better. We also have more time for our mother now.”

The current situation might be tough, but he is hopeful that when this is all over, the world will be a better place because of the lessons this crisis has taught the world – particularly about the importance of the family.

“The biggest lesson in this crisis is the importance of the small things, and the things that we take for granted,” Adiwang said.

“Especially when it comes to family because they are the ones who would never leave, that’s why we should put more importance on them.”
