It’s Temi’s time

Artemio John Dela Cruz – Tecson known as “Temi” to the music community in New York, was in town to promote his single “Kunwari,” a ballad composed by Agat Morallos and arranged by Dominic Benedicto.

New York-based singer Temi has just released a single entitled ‘Kunwari,’ an R&B ballad now available on digital music platforms. 

“The song is about false hope, pretentious love trying to get over it,” 26-year-old Temi told Manila Standard in an interview. 

Born on March 8, 1993, and originally from Paranaque City, Temi is presently residing in Queens NY.

“We moved to New York when I was 17. I was away for a decade and I’m back to connect with my roots and take a chance pursuing my passion for music,” he said.

The singer is the youngest among five siblings of all boys of Milagros Dela Cruz. His passion for singing all started when he was in pre-school years. He started singing even before he could straightforwardly understand what the song actually meant.

“My mom would coach me with lyrics and meaning,” Temi, who considers Stevie Wonder and Gary V as his biggest music influence, explained.

At a very young age, he joined an all-boys choir group at St. Andrews School in Manila. From then on, he started to sing in special and corporate events. 

One song that influenced him more as he couldn’t get over from listening to was the OST of Titanic – “My Heart will Go On.” The melody never escaped his mind and became his personal favorite from the time he first heart of the Celine Dion classic.

He joined various singing competitions including Duet Bulilit on ABS CBN in which a musical director spotted him looking for talents to form the boyband group – XY Kidz. The group was recognized by the Asia Pacific Excellence Awards in 2004 and 2005 as top young entertainer. 

To further develop his talent in singing, he took voice lessons at Center for Pop, with Ryan Cayabyab, and at ABS CBN Talent center. He also did to a little bit of acting and modeling for popular shows and brands like MMK, Globe, and Nido to name a few.  

He visited New York in 2007 to visit his mom and brother and have decided to move there for good in 2010. He left the Philippines with a heavy heart as he left his passion for music.   

Moving to New York did not stop Temi to continue his love for music. New York setting somehow helped him learn new styles in music and culture. He started singing in various open mic gigs where he was spotted by Elton Lugay who is one of his mentors in NY. 

Temi is a TOFA (The Outstanding Filipinos in America) artist since 2017 and a resident artist of RJP. This is where Jeanette Marco, USA Team team director of WCOPA, spotted him and got him to join WCOPA 2019 (World Championship of Performing Arts) where he was a semi finalist and garnered three Gold medals and two silver medals competing with other 60 countries.
