Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya—Production of vegetables used for the “pinakbet” dish – a popular viand with its roots in northern Luzon—in this town is growing in volume for the past three years because of various assistance to farmers.

Paz Florez, Municipal Agriculture Officer, said pinakbet vegetables produced in its lowland areas have increased steadily from 655 metric tons in 2017, 1,900 MT in 2018 and 2,273 MT in 2019.
“This increase was achieved due to the sustained help and assistance to our vegetable farmers. Our farmers are always on top of the LGU’s priority sectors for various assistance,” Florez said.
Ginger, cucumber and green pepper also showed production of 17.22 percent as computed average growth for the last 3 years, she added.
Florez said the MAO hopes to target 22 percent production growth this year for these agricultural products.
Other vegetable ingredients of a typical pinakbet dish include okra, tomatoes, eggplant, ampalaya (bitter gourd), sitaw (string beans), siling duwag (chilis), and kamote (sweet potato).
Florez said the LGU’s help for vegetable farmers were in the form of free seeds, sourced from the Department of Agriculture and from the LGU’s green house facilities.
“We expect to sustain our vibrant agriculture sector in the form of our assistance and from our partner agencies,” Florez said.
