The Philippine Bamboo Industry Council, an interagency group composed of national and local government representatives, plans to convert at least 19,000 hectares of land into bamboo plantations in 2020, including 13,000 hectares in Western Visayas.

Trade Secretary and council chairman Ramon Lopez said In a meeting on Jan. 9 the Trade Department was ready to provide shared service facilities to those interested in bamboo processing.

Agri-business ventures, like bamboo production and processing, are also part of the Strategic Investments Priorities Plan of the Department of Trade and Industry, which entitles investors to tax incentives.

Lopez committed to include bamboo plantations in the department’s Roads Leveraging Linkages of Industry and Trade program with the Public Works Department.

The program aims to build “plant to market” roads to ease the delivery of products, especially from remote areas.
