Kidapawan City—A top Moro National Liberation Front commander has survived a gun attack on Saturday in Matalam town, Cotabato, but his driver was killed.

Police said MNLF political affairs officer and Barangay Ilian chairman Kutin Idtug, 67, and two other companions were waylaid by at least 10 armed men in Barangay Marbel.

The suspects opened fire at Idtug’s vehicle.

Matalam chief of police Maj. Joseph Brian Placer said the driver of the multicab that Idtug and his companions were riding died on the spot due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Idtug also sustained gunshot wounds but he is now in a stable condition at the Midway Hospital in Matalam.

One of his companions, Antonio Saban, sustained minor injuries, Placer said.

“Allegedly the suspects are positioned at the sugarcane plantation if we based it on the traces from the position of the vehicle,” Placer said.

Police recovered several slugs and empty shells from M14 and M16 rifles and a carbine from the crime scene.
