Angkas asks DOTR to extend trial period

Ride-hailing service provider Angkas said it expects the government to extend its trial operations while waiting for a law legalizing motorcycle taxis in the country.

“While they are finalizing the law, we hope that they will extend the pilot testing,” Angkas chief transport advocate George Royeca told reporters.

Angkas received a six-month trial run that allowed it to operate in Metro Manila and Metro Cebu in June this year.  There are 27,000 riders enlisted in the Angkas network.

“So far, the findings are positive. I’m happy to say that this is something that we are able to maintain. We are working with DOTR to maintain our service,” Royeca said.

He said they would present before the Senate the result of the pilot test by January next year.

All 27,000 bike-partners were swiftly trained on new safety protocol to comply with the mandated requirements of the DOTR TWG. Angkas said it maintained a 99.997-percent safety record despite the initial speculation from government bodies on its safety.

Angkas chief executive Angeline Tham said the company was working on giving more payment options to passengers. “We’re looking at developing credit cards as one of the payments options,” Tham said.
